Today, Trim Enabler appeared at the front page of my favorite tech-blog, Gizmodo:

What better way to celebrate this then pushing a new update?

This new version of Trim Enabler (2.1) enables you to select any of your disk, be it SSD or hard drive, in the S.M.A.R.T view.

You can update your Trim Enabler by selecting Trim Enabler->Look for updates… or download it fresh from the page: Trim Enabler.

Remember, if you are going to patch for Trim, you have to take the .app out of the DMG first!

Trim Enabler 2.0 is now out of beta!

  • Finally fixed the last bug
  • Added automatic updates
  • Trim Enabler 2.0 can now be downloaded here:

So I finally got a couple of hours to work on Trim Enabler, and the result is Beta 5.

I have rewritten alot of the code from scratch because it was bad design, and I have used some tricks I learned while making Kext Drop.

    Beta 5 features are:

  • Much faster at patching then previous versions
  • No longer need to use an Update-button or restart app to see changes
  • Better status messages
  • Should have fixed alot of crashes some experienced
  • Should properly report SSD name or if you have many, the amount of SSD’s.

  • If people can test and confirm this version works well (especially you who experienced crasches with b4) I will conclude testing and release it as final 2.0 version.

This should fix the problem with app crashing on startup.

Next step is to have the switch and status text update automatically without having to use Update button after each action…

And a big thanks to all donaters and supporters! smile

    UPDATED: see bottom

Still some stuff I need to work on, so still Beta

    Changes:

    • Rewritten from AppleScript to 100% Objective-C
    • Features new S.M.A.R.T tool to learn about your drive’s health
    • New icon, courtesy of vegrafik
    • No longer installs an old driver, instead patches your current*

*Previous Trim Enabler never was a longterm solution, although a label in the app said “Only for Snow Leopard” I made a claim on this blog that it would not be any problems to use it in Lion. Well as some users have pointed out, using an older driver could lead to slower speeds and I admit I did take the advice the wrong way and chose to ignore it. My apologies to those persons and the users for my ignorance and for taking so long to fix the issue.

If you have patched in Lion with previous Trim Enabler (1.1 or 1.2, not the 2.0 Beta 1) then I suggest you proceed with following steps to update your driver to the latest version:

    1. Type in terminal: diskutil mount ‘Recovery HD’
    2. Open Recovery HD in Finder
    3. Navigate to BaseSystem.dmg (it is hidden, so you will need to set Finder to show hidden files), open/mount it
    4. Open BaseSystem in Finder, navigate to System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext
    5. Use Kexthelper app to install that kext back to your system
    6. Use Trim Enabler 2.0
    • Slider button and status text does not update properly on patch/unpatch, that is why there is a Update button, press it 3 seconds after you have activated or deactivated the switch to properly update status

Should not be too hard to fix, but I am drowning in school work so that’s why I’m releasing it as Beta 2. It will also be useful to gather feedback for a final v.2.0 release, I can only test so much with one computer.

Should be compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion.

Please report back with your experience.

    See new post: http://www.groths.org/?p=562

    Trim Enabler 2.0 is finished

    No more Applescript, all objective-C

    Will upload soon

Edit: Found a bug with button not updating correctly, will fix tomorrow and upload

in the middle of school exams + releasing an iPhone app atm

if you wanna try out beta for trim enabler for lion, here:
    SSD utility test version

about the only thing that works in that version is “Enable trim” button, it will generate a TRIM kext at your desktop. install it with kexthelper and see if it works, and report back here.

note that this is in-development, don’t try on your work computer.

if something goes wrong, it’s easy to restore in Lion, boot backup partition and use terminal to mount mac hd, copy kext from backup partition to mac hd extension folder. if you don’t know what “cp”, “cd” and “terminal” is, then don’t try this at home kids.

will probably be released around 10.7.2
it won’t feature any other stuff then enabling trim (for Lion)
